Folic acid is a vitamin that our body cannot produce itself. It must therefore be ingested in sufficient quantities through food. Especially during pregnancy it plays an important role in the development of the unborn child. Sources of folic acid in the vegetarian and vegan diet are e.g. asparagus, broccoli, nuts and whole grain products.
Unfortunately, folic acid is often only found in small quantities in our foods. One food alone is hardly a sufficient amount of this vitamin. To get the 400 micrograms of folic acid you need a day, you would have to eat more than 60 slices of whole grain bread a day.
The vitamin folic acid is also very sensitive to heat. For this reason, vegetables that contain folic acid, for example, should be prepared as gently as possible.
Folic acid - vitality for young and old
Folic acid is not only indispensable for pregnant women, it is also an important companion into old age.
Are you getting tired very quickly lately? These symptoms are very typical of anemia, which often occurs when there is an insufficient supply of folic acid. This vitamin is important for blood formation, as the cells involved in the bone marrow often have to divide. Other indications of a deficiency are weak nerves and an increased homocysteine content in the blood.
How can this deficit be triggered? Decreased dietary intake is certainly a possible cause. Perhaps our organism cannot use folic acid properly either. And in special situations we simply have an increased need. These include rapid growth, alcohol abuse, high cigarette consumption, or the use of certain medications.
